CBD Laws, Safety, and Standardization in the United States

Part of what makes cannabis such a polarizing and complicated subject for lawmakers is due to its nature as a very diverse plant. The cannabis plant is known for both THC and CBD, which are both naturally occurring elements of the plant with starkly different effects. CBD, or the cannabidiol content in cannabis, is generally regarded as the most physically beneficial part of the plant. This is because CBD is a natural anti-inflammatory and has inherent healing properties. Cannabis has been used as a medicinal plant for thousands of years, and much of the medicinal content found in cannabis comes from this CBD. THC, in contrast, is the part of the cannabis plant that produces the ‘high’ that most people associate with smoking weed.

Both CBD and THC are incredibly important to the world of medical marijuana, and there is a lot to be said about the effectiveness of each in regard to chronic health conditions, diseases, mental disorders, and other issues in our world today. CBD legalization has been much more common than THC, especially in states that have been slow to legalize regularly marijuana. This is because CBD can come from hemp-derived products and can be used for medical purposes without actually impairing one’s mind or behavior. Even in states in the country that do not have medical marijuana programs, CBD products are generally considered legal and sold around the state.

Naturally, this means that there has had to be some regulation of product safety standards throughout the years as more and more CBD products are manufactured and sold throughout the United States. For many years, the United States did not recognize the difference between regular marijuana and cannabidiol, meaning that the two were clumped together in one illegal substance that was not allowed in the United States.

It wasn’t until much later in the 1990s that CBD was actually seen for what it is – a great medicinal alternative to other prescription medications and topical treatment options. Interestingly, CBD has become very accessible throughout the United States even in states that do not allow medical marijuana programs. This means that, at the very least, patients struggling with chronic health conditions can have access to cannabidiol that may help in reducing levels of inflammation and pain throughout the body.

It is true that, while more strides have been made to increase the safety and effectiveness of CBD products being sold throughout the United States, the FDA has yet to recognize food or beverage products that contain CBD as legal to sell, make, or buy. Now, this does not mean that you cannot find these products on the market, but it means that the companies who sell them are not regulated by the normal standards of the FDA that we are used to in our other food and beverage industries. However, this may be changing.

Lately, the FDA announced that they were going to be introducing a CBD Product Safety and Standardization Act. This would mean that CBD would become a legal ingredient to include in the manufacturing of food and beverage products. This would also mean that you can be sure of proper regulation and industry standards setup in the CBD industry. While I don’t always agree with the government sticking their hands in every sector of our economic market, I can definitely get behind some old fashioned regulations for the food and beverage industry. If I’m putting it in my body, I want to make sure that I know what it’s all about! There are many fake CBD products out there on the market they do not actually contain the things that they say, so you have to watch out for that.
